New version: less dynamic range, more flexibility, less crackling (hopefully)
Hi all,
No idea who gets sent info that I wrote this.
Anyway, I've uploaded a new version of Discover. The only difference is that I commented out the "AttackType" in the Sound Set XML. This was what I was using to drive the BBC player with two controllers: the modulation one, and the expression one. This increases the dynamic range markedly. In a great playback engine this would be great too.
However, both Spitfire and Sibelius have issues (it's mostly Sibelius, TBH). As soon as any great quantity of MIDI information is getting sent across tracks at the same time, there's crackling because of an apparent contention issue between information going out (MIDI) and information coming back (Audio).
So, by sending no CC11 controllers, we're sending a lot less information: in fact, we're almost halving the number of controllers.
Although this makes the library less... er... dynamic, there's an up-side, which is that if you have the Graphical MIDI Tool, controller 11 is a nice one to use for drawing expression curves that doesn't interfere with the dynamic layer. With the way the sound set worked before, if you draw a controller 11 curve, Sibelius would just continue to reset CC11 and nuke your setting. Maybe this is the way to go: I tried to be clever and Sibelius punished me for it!
Using CC11 on just a few tracks for expression shouldn't cause too much of an issue, and for this library it's an excellent way to humanise it.
I wouldn't mind feedback on how you're using the sound set (or any of the sound sets) don't be a stranger! Would be nice to put a quote on the website!
The best place to discuss this sound set is here: https://www.scorelikeadaw.com/user-groups/spitfire-audio-bbc-discover-sound-set/
Main question at the moment is whether the silence from users is because they're happy or something else - it would be nice to actually properly launch this site at some point, it's been in soft-launch for a while (mostly so that stuff like I've been fixing didn't affect too many people). I really need to earn some money back from spending on all those libraries, the development certificates, and all the time.
Cheers,
Chris
